Cubiture recently was contacted by a Process Safety Chemical Engineer with a straightforward request: quote us on reconfiguring the office so we get more out of the space we have.
Notice what that request is not. It is not a question about what more square footage would cost. It is a question about what the floor they already had could actually hold.
The first thing we did was take furniture out.
The existing workstations were worn out, and they were laid out for a version of the company that no longer existed. Pulling them is what made the rest of the project possible.
What went back in were re-manufactured Herman Miller cubicles in an open concept layout. Two things drove that choice.
The first was the work. They needed people talking to each other, so we planned for sightlines and proximity instead of walls.
The second was what came after. They told us they wanted stations that would work in more than one kind of environment, so we chose modular cubicles that could be reconfigured and passed along to people in sales, bookkeeping, or administration as the business grew. A floor built that way does not have to be torn out the next time the company changes shape.
